How Crypto, AI, and Gambling Sectors Are Buying the 2026 Midterms

LOS ANGELES, California, August 21, 2026  — American corporations have set an all-time record in spending on 2026 House and Senate races, at $517 million. Between January 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, that total already towers over the $461 million for the full cycle in 2024. And at least $294 million of that spending comes from crypto, AI and online betting firms.

A New Class of Donors

This year, Crypto companies, AI companies and betting companies have become the ones who most influence races. Campaign finance watchdogs and political strategists from both parties characterized the change as unprecedented in scope. The funds come from a new breed of billionaire, those in industries that were barely tenable a generation ago.

Crypto itself is $189 million annually, meaning it already reached its entire total for the full 2024 cycle. Which means, this cycle crypto is the biggest corporate political spender in America. That sector accounts for 37 percent of all tracked corporate midterm giving so far.

How the Money Moves

Organizations organize their giving via super PACs, affiliate PACs and dark money nonprofits that do not reveal donors. Those vehicles can accept unlimited amounts of money but cannot communicate directly with candidates individually. Rather, they pay for ads and run get-out-the-vote operations, holding their own campaign events.

Fairshake—crypto’s leading super PAC—kicked off the cycle with a $193 million warchest. It retains some $130 million in reserve, so tens of millions have been put to use already. Among the most prominent backers are Coinbase, Ripple and venture firm Andreessen Horowitz.

AI’s Rapid Rise

Leading the Future, the preeminent AI-focused super PAC this cycle, has commanded $140 million in funds since January 2 of 2025. That outtotal is now already greater than what Fairshake raised over the same timeframe in the last cycle. OpenAI and Anthropic, two AI companies reportedly spent more than $23 million against each other in one House race.

The spending, AI executives hope, would influence upcoming congressional legislation on regulating artificial intelligence. By June, two major PACs aligned with this mission had directed a minimum of $44 million into 40 candidates. More than $72 million has been provided by online betting firms for that same midterm push.

Concerns Over Influence

Some critics fear the influx could enable a narrow set of corporate interests to drown out voters’ more pressing economic needs. Since 2010, detractors have tracked spending by watchdog group Public Citizen against $1.58 billion in corporate political giving overall. That previous baseline dates back to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision permitting direct corporate election spending.

AdImpact has estimated 2026 political ad spending will total an overall record $11.6 billion. Those expenditure figures indicate those sectors are not going anywhere in Washington after November. The campaign finance disclosures that register the sums with the Federal Election Commission.

Unaffiliated candidates on both sides have also received industry-aligned funding from the new donor class. Analysts predict an even faster spending rate as primary contests yield to general election races. Whether the tide of new voters has a corresponding ripple effect in November remains an open question.

Others among certain lawmakers have also pushed for stricter disclosure rules around the dark money networks behind these campaigns. Industry groups say their spending is merely an exercise in standard political involvement accessible to any industry. Whoever controls Congress after November, the pressures on regulation will only grow.
