Los Angeles Magazine Marks 20th Anniversary of The Food Event at Calamigos Ranch

LOS ANGELES, October 7, 2026 – Tucked beneath the sprawling sycamores and twinkling lanterns of Calamigos Ranch, the subtle aroma of charred oak, slow-roasted pork, and fresh coastal sea salt drifted through the autumn air.

Twenty years ago, a small assembly of local chefs gathered to give voice to the fledgling food scene in the city. Two decades later, Los Angeles Magazine’s The Food Event has established itself as the epicurean mecca of Southern California. The iconic event is making a return to its familiar site on Kanan Dume Road in Malibu for a three-hour tasting session running from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 4.

And this matters because LA’s dining scene has evolved dramatically since the event’s 2006 debut.

Then, there were French bistros and steak restaurants. Now, on the festival grounds, there is an incredible array of diversity ranging from Oaxacan molé cooked over an open fire to Japanese crudos and craft smash burgers. The best of this event would be the access that attendees got to the innovative chefs who have been changing how Angelenos eat.

“Reaching two decades isn’t just about celebrating longevity,” explained one veteran Santa Monica restaurateur while plating a smoked yellowtail tostada. “It’s about honoring the resilience of LA’s culinary community, especially after everything the industry has weathered over the past few years.”

In addition to the delicious food samples, the attendees were able to explore the rustic courtyards, tasting exquisite wines from local California wineries, artisanal drinks, and alcohol-free sparkling botanical drinks. Cooking demonstrations provided an up-close experience of watching the culinary masters at work.

Of course, throwing a huge outdoor party for thousands in the midst of the Malibu Canyons is not easy. The traffic in the canyons on Kanan Dume Road was already very heavy at noon, and getting there early meant that you had to be prepared to wait in line. (For future reference, get VIP access to avoid the long gate line.)

But within the serene grounds of Calamigos Ranch, all that was forgotten. It felt closer to the backyard barbecue where everyone takes their cuisine very seriously than the stressed environment of a trade show.

With the afternoon sunlight filtering through the century-old oaks, the anniversary celebration demonstrated how even in a city obsessed with the next hot thing, there are traditions that become even better with time.
