This was when the Detroit Tigers traded two-time American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (2024, 2025 AL Cy Young) to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The addition gives the back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers (who won titles in both 2024 and 2025) another front-of-the-rotation starter in pursuit of a third consecutive title.
What the Dodgers Gave Up
The Dodgers received Skubal in exchange for three top prospects: outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith. All three rank among the Dodgers’ top ten prospects leading up to the deadline. However, for a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber, this return looked thin by league standards—an editorial sentiment shared widely across baseball media.
The deal completed minutes after the Dodgers lost 3-2 to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, August 1, marking their second consecutive loss to Boston at Dodger Stadium over the weekend that changed the tone of this franchise.
Skubal has been baseball’s most dominant pitcher over the last three seasons leading into his move to Los Angeles. He has won two AL Cy Young awards and recorded his 1,000th career strikeout against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 (striking out Taylor Ward in the first inning). He had surgery in May 2026 to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. Yet, he returned to the mound in June—just about five weeks later—and re-established his dominance. Entering August, Skubal holds a 7-5 record with a 2.79 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 114 strikeouts over 96.2 innings in 16 starts this season.
He will make his Dodgers debut on Tuesday, August 4 at 1:20 PM CT at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, three days after the team acquired him.
Skubal on Leaving Detroit
Skubal has been a part of the Tigers organization since he was chosen in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Seattle University. In a postgame press conference in Detroit on Saturday night following his final game with the team, he conveyed the conflicted nature of the moment without any subterfuge:”It’s insane because it’s crazy,” Skubal said. “Coming into the season, I didn’t plan on doing this. But circumstances change, situations change.”
He also thanked the organization for staying with him after a bumpy beginning to his career. “I have been through a lot,” he noted, “and feel like I’ve lived life in a way. This is a club that has never stopped believing in me.”
At the same time, Skubal is aware of what the expectations are when joining a team leading the NL West and seeking history. “I’m excited to be a Dodger,” he said in his post-trade statement. “I am excited to head down there and meet all those guys and try to pursue three championships in a row. That is hard to do. I am happy to be included in it.”
Why This Matters
Adding Skubal—who is under team control through the 2026 season before entering free agency—gives Los Angeles a clear rotation slot alongside Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and Blake Snell. MLB.com’s Mike Petriello went a step further in his post-trade analysis article, noting that acquiring a dominant, reigning Cy Young winner mid-season compares closely to Milwaukee’s historic pickup of Hall of Famer CC Sabathia in July 2008. While Sabathia carried Milwaukee to the postseason on an expiring deal, Skubal gives Los Angeles an elite ace to spearhead another championship run.

This marks the second time in three years that the Dodgers have acquired a Tigers starting pitcher at the trade deadline, following their deal for Jack Flaherty on July 30, 2024.
