Sophie Cranney survived a car accident that left her with serious injuries and the determination to help others in her situation
ATLANTA, GA, September 10, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Atlanta, GA, September 10 – Sophia “Sophie” Cranney of Connersville, Indiana, is the third winner of our firm’s Survivor of a Car Accident Scholarship. Sophie, 20, is in her sophomore year at Brigham Young University. She survived a car accident on December 18th, 2019.
Sophie sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a fractured spine and was later diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Upon reading her essay, we were inspired by the positive change and determination she drew from her unfortunate accident.
Due to her injuries, Sophie suffered from frequent fainting episodes and an eye condition known as horizontal gaze nystagmus that made it impossible for her to read.
Although she still experiences fainting and other symptoms of POTS on a daily basis, she has regained her strength and ability to read through months of intense cardiac rehab and physical therapy.
During her recovery, she recalls feeling as though the fun-loving, energetic Sophie had died and been replaced with a depressed and debilitated version of her former self.
However, after months of deep thought, she realized that the part of herself she lost was also selfish and took close relationships for granted. She writes, “Instead of grieving the loss of my prior self, I began to focus instead on the person I wanted to become.”
Sophie came to the realization that up until that fateful December day, she had prioritized school over her relationship with her mother and friends.
Sophie’s epiphany has inspired her to dedicate her time to helping other people and fueled her to persevere despite her ongoing battle with POTS. In her own words, she says, “Although every day of my life is plagued with the symptoms of POTS, I refuse to let my illness destroy my spirit.”
During Sophie’s recovery, she built a name for herself on TikTok, where she spreads awareness about invisible diseases like POTS. She also runs a handmade dog bandana shop on Etsy, from which she donates proceeds to people who need service dogs.
As a second-year psychology major, Sophie aspires to graduate and eventually receive her Ph.D. from an accredited university. One day, she hopes to work as a psychologist and treat children who are living with chronic and terminal illnesses.

Anyone who has survived injuries sustained in a car accident is eligible to apply as long as they are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate program at an accredited university in the United States.
