MacArthur Foundation Announces 20 Recipients of Its Latest “Genius” Grants

LOS ANGELES, California, October 3, 2026  — Well, its newest class of fellows — often referred to as “genius grant” winners — has just been released by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The award honors extraordinary creativity in the arts, sciences and public service. The recipients do not apply and, rather than a pompous letter in the mail, are often informed of the honor with a surprising phone call.

How the Fellowship Works

The best part: every fellow receives an unencumbered grant issued over the course of 5 years, with no strings attached on how the funds are deployed. As explained by the MacArthur Foundation, the award is intended as a “guarantee to your future self and not merely rewarding past achievement.” A closed nomination and review process over several years determines awardees.

The foundation does not accept applications or open calls. Instead, a rotating pool of anonymized nominators picks finalists working in a variety of fields. The nominations are then reviewed by a different selection committee which then makes final recommendations to the board of the foundation.

A Tradition Spanning Decades

Since it was founded in 1981, the fellowship has honored individuals working in areas as diverse as physics and public health to poetry and documentary film production. What they have in common is that prior winners include scientists working to address climate change, journalists finding forgotten stories, and artists rethinking how a community sees itself. It’s one of the most closely followed awards in American philanthropy.

Award amounts have been progressively increased over time to cover higher costs and the foundation’s expansion. In part, because of their work tracked by organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts looking at how unrestricted funding can shape careers in creative industries over time, research on arts and culture has prevailed. Often fellows refer to the award as validation for work that was largely absent from public view.

How the Award Has Been Used by Past Fellows

Past recipients have found new community-based research, funded independent arts projects or alleviated financial pressures from years of creative work with their grants. Others have called the recognition bittersweet, coming as it does during moments of personal struggle that fell into an unwanted burden of honor. The funds are unrestricted, which means that fellows can direct support wherever their work needs it most.

Philanthropy researchers say that unrestricted awards like this one are a rarity in the universe of funding overall. At least one analysis, including some published through a nonprofit resource on philanthropic giving called Candid, shows those grants come with certain report-related strings attached. The only reason the MacArthur model is so alluring is it gets rid of that layer of oversight completely.

Why the Announcement Matters

As always, the fellowship is a harbinger of what fields and ideas are influencing American cultural and scientific life. When a winner is announced, their affiliation — with a specific university or arts organization, for example — is generally emphasized. That visibility can result in a lot of extra attention paid to a fellow’s continued work long after the grant itself.

For this latest cohort, the announcement launches five years of flexible support to pursue their passions. The foundation is immediately continuing its confidential nomination process for next year’s class. The names of future finalists and nominators will be kept secret until the next announcement, as is tradition.

Candidates rarely see a clear structure to the announcement of good news about fellowship, which is often directly called not an official notification. Most echo a combination of disbelief and validation when finding out they were selected without even applying. The surprise, of course, is an iconic part of the award in American philanthropy.

The fellowship has had a wide net so those classes can be in frequently competing fields each year from theoretical physics to true community organizing. The diversity is deliberate, emanating from a desire on the part of the foundation to acknowledge creativity across the full spectrum of human endeavor. The combination of disciplines in each year’s competition gives observers a good indication of where the best new ideas are coming from.

Individuals and institutions associated with this year’s fellows have already started touting the honor in their own communications. Selection as a fellow is often used by universities, museums and research centres to lend visibility to institutional or disciplinary work more broadly. Which means, at least for the recipients themselves, that over the course of the next few years they’ll have an unusual degree of freedom to pursue ambitious projects without some of the usual limitations around funding through traditional mechanisms.
